MERCANDIA                                                                                        PER HENRIKSEN

CHARITY & DONATIONS

According to Per Henriksen it is great - when possible - to donate means or things in order to please others than oneself.

Through the years e.g. the following donations have been made:

A Modern Merchant Ship as a Votive Ship

In 1985 the church in Frederikshavn received a model of a MERCANDIA-ship of the Gigant-type. These ships as well as the majority of the MERCANDIA-ships were built by the local shipyard.

Denmark's Last Lightship

In 1991 "Fyrskib XXI" was purchased and donated to Ebeltoft (in Jutland), where it now offers café and hotel facilities in the Frigate Harbour.

The lightship was built in 1910 - 1911 and is the last Danish lightship without a propelling machinery.

A Flagpole in Hals

Per Henriksen's mother was born in Hals (in Jutland), and consequently he spent many of his childhood's holidays there. In 1999 Per Henriksen donated a new, maritime flagpole to Hals.

Dragør

The first MERCANDIA-ships were registered in Dragør,
a small village on the island of Amager that Per Henriksen is very fond of.

In 1999 Per Henriksen achieved an old harbour warehouse and donated it to the maritime museum in Dragør. The very same year the sculpture Dragørbåden by Poul Isbak was installed, on which occasion Per Henriksen also assisted financially.

Museum Items have been given to various Danish museums such as:

Aalborg Søfarts- og Marinemuseum (a maritime museum in the northern part of Jutland), that has established a MERCANDIA-exhibition
Handels- og Søfartsmuseet på Kronborg (The Danish Maritime Museum, which is housed at Kronborg Castle, the castle of Hamlet and Holger Danske, in Elsinore)
Hals Museum
Dragør Museum
Bangsbo Museum in Frederikshavn

Steno Diabetes Center
is an endocrinological, chiefly diabetological research hospital and international teaching centre that specialises in treating and managing diabetes. Steno Diabetes Center is owned by Novo Nordisk A/S and has received several donations from Per Henriksen/MERCANDIA.

Det Kongelige Vajsenhus (The Royal Orphanage), where Per Henriksen spent his schooldays, has received large amounts. The school enrols orphaned children or children, who have lost one of their parents. The purposes are to contribute to school journeys, to award prizes to those, who exhibit excellent comradeship, etc.

JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Danmark), Dyrenes Beskyttelse (Danish Society for the Protection of Animals), Folkekirkens Nødhjælp (DanChurchAid), Red Barnet (Save the Children) and similar organizations have received contributions, and a church on the island of Amager, Filips Kirke, (where Per Henriksen was confirmed), has received a model of a sailing ship (votive ship).
